community event to create discussion around education, graffiti, and activism.
University of La Verne will be hosting the second annual “Empowerment through Art and Graffiti” community event. The event will include a constructed graffiti wall for participants to display issues of personal and community importance, live performances, graffiti and street artist, and two speakers panels.
ETAG is an event that came out of the ANTH 409-Social Commentary and Activism through Graffiti course at ULV held in Spring 2012. The focus of this event is to share experiences and spread awareness of relevant issues of interest to the students through the medium of graffiti.
Adjunct Professor Gerlaine Kiamco and Master of Arts candidate Amber Alford will be working with the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, the Department of Education and Teacher Development, Voices in Action, Black Student Union, First Generation Student Success Program, Coalition for Diversity, Multicultural Club Council, and as well as other student organizations to put on the event.
As stated on the university webpage, “It is the mission of the University of La Verne to provide opportunities for students to achieve their educational goals and become contributing citizens to the global community.” This event was envisioned as one way students can put institutional values into practice and work towards the President of University of La Verne’s goals of developing a learning community that provides a space for students to become reflective about themselves and the world in which we are creating. And also as a platform to discuss the role of art and activism in our community.
