THEATRE ON-STAGE: My Name is Rachel Corrie, by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner

Rachel Corrie" to our campus and community.
This play is in keeping with the University of La Verne’s Vision and Values of promoting “peace with justice … (and ) encouraging values-based ethical behavior”. The play is the true story of a young, idealistic, 23-year- old American student named Rachel Corrie and her emerging sense of social and political justice. Her life abruptly ended while protesting the impending destruction of a Palestinian home by an Israeli bulldozer. Yet her story lives on, and in this remarkable performance, transcends the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and raises it to a highly intimate, humanistic level that applies to all politically, socially, and economically repressed peoples throughout the world.
There will be a 30 minute panel discussion following the performance. Panel members include: Jason A. Neidleman, Professor of Political Science; William A. Cook, Professor of English; Susan Angelo, Director of the play; Samara Frame, playing Rachel Corrie; and Steven Kent, Director of ULV Theater who will serve as moderator.

The University of La Verne Theatre Department will present "The Agony of Colin Powell", a monologue in verse that dramatizes the internal moral and spiritual conflicts that confronted our former Secretary of State. It is a fictional dramatization brought to life by Lavelle Wilson, portraying Secretary Powell, a man that has climbed to the highest rungs of political success only to realize that he has sold his soul to reach that state. Like Faustus or Everyman he now turns inward to face himself and the consequences of his climb to power.
A discussion of the play will follow the performance.

Exhibit Runs from April 28 to May 24, 2012
Opening performance on Saturday, April 28, from 1 to 7 pm, in La Fetra Auditorium
Gallery Hours: Monday through Thursday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, or by appt. Admission is free.
Contemporary art from the Pacific Islands is rarely exhibited in the United States. Artists throughout the Pacific usually exhibit their work in Aotearoa-New Zealand, Australia, Asia, and Europe. This exhibit hopes to break that practice and make a statement for new, contemporary visual art, filmmaking, and performance with some of the new and most important emerging contemporary artists of the Pacific Islands today.
“ATA: An Exhibition of Contemporary Samoan Art” features artists Jewel Castro (US), Chantal Fraser (AU), Chuck Feesago (US), Graham Fletcher (NZ), Tanu Gago (NZ), Shigeyuki Kihara (NZ), Mau Mauiava (NZ), Rosanna Raymond (UK), Daniel Satele (NZ), Siliga David Setoga (NZ), Angela Tiatia (AU), and Dan Taulapapa McMullin (US).
Opening day of the exhibit, Saturday, April 28, will be a “Focus on Pacific Islander Contemporary Film and Performance” held in La Fetra Auditorium. New films from Aotearoa-New Zealand and the Samoa Islands will be previewed, followed by a media and performance panel discussion moderated by Maori writer Michelle Erai of UCLA, and include filmmakers Sila Agavale, Micki Davis, Alex Munoz, Napoleon Tavale and others. Erai will be also moderating an artist’s panel with visual artists Chantal Fraser, Chuck Feesago, Tanu Gago, Rosanna Raymond, Angela Tiatia, and Dan Taulapapa McMullin.
Following, US actor-playwright Napoleon Tavale will perform an excerpt of his one-person work, INOA FANAU (Birth of a Name), in tandem with a poetry performance hour together with fellow poets Sila Tuitupou and Dan Taulapapa McMullin.
This afternoon program will be completed with an artist reception at the Harris Gallery for “ATA: An Exhibition of Contemporary Samoan Art,” including an art performance by London-based Samoan-Maori artist, Rosanna Raymond.
