The women’s soccer team played a hard match against Redlands Wednesday that resulted in a 2-0 loss, amid a partly cloudy afternoon, a stark contrast to the heat from two weeks ago.

“It was a midfielders game,” La Verne head coach Wendy Zwissler said. “We really played well.”

Both teams fought hard back and forth but remained scoreless while spending time in each other’s half of the field.

La Verne’s Falisha Ramirez had an opportunity in the first half as she drove hard toward the goal, but her shot resulted in a strong save by the Redlands goalie with 24:40 left in the half.

“We played hard,” senior defender Courtney Cooley said. “They had a few great kicks.”

Redlands pressured the La Verne defense toward the end of the first half, and as a result got on the board first with a terrific shot that bounced off the post into the net for the first goal of the game with 1:19 left in the first half.

After halftime, La Verne threatened to score its first goal of the game. Ramirez made another athletic move, but the Redlands goalie made a diving save, stopping the shot and Redlands defense promptly ejected the ball from play.

“They are definitely beatable,” said Ramirez, senior forward.

After the defensive stand, Redlands took charge, as they brought the ball deep into La Verne territory which resulted in a goal by Jessi Hoyt, knocking it in with her head, for the second goal of the game at the 4:57 mark.

The Leopards would not score in the game and lost 2-0.

“We were evenly matched,” said Jessica Ramirez, defender for the La Verne team, “We played a good game.”

The Leopards will play again at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Occidental, before coming back home to La Verne to host  Cal State San Marcos at 4 p.m. on Monday.
