Close those curtains, tell your family you are dead, and let your girlfriend know that it is over, it is that time of the year again. Yes, my friends “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2″ has finally been released, and I am happy to say that it delivers on its social life reducing promise of being one of the most addictive games of the year.
For about two years now, the hype behind MW2 has been building since the release of the original in 2007. The game has been hailed as one of the greatest multiplayer games ever. Activision tried to keep us busy with last year’s soul less “Call of Duty: World at War,” but from this writer’s judgment, that game just did not deliver the goods. Developer Infinity Ward has finally lived to its promise and it is about time.
Right from the main menu, MW2 is made up of three different game modes: single play campaign mode, cooperative mode, competitive multiplayer. To be honest, the main bulk of MW2 comes from its multiplayer.
The structure of the game mode is that you play against other players online and gain points with every kill or win in a round. You are also offered challenges to complete and earn points. These points level up your rank and unlock various things like guns, attachments, and perks.
There are 16 maps and 12 games modes that can be unlocked as you level up. Game modes included classic free-for-all, team death match, and capture the flag, with some new additions like 3rd person death match, and demolition. Each map is laid out brilliantly, with a few exceptions that feel kind of awkward or frustrating.
Try hiding from a helicopter in “Wastelands” and you will learn that dodging bullets in an open field just does not work. The maps are very diverse and range from mountains, deserts, and some random person’s cabin.
Matches are well balanced and the community has already been well established. This is where the game shines and sets the standard for online multiplayer to a new high.
In addition to the multiplayer, Infinity Ward has included a cooperative mode called Special Ops. This mode has two players working together to complete mission challenges that come from the single player campaign. It is well developed, but feels standard and is kind of a shame that something involving cooperative mode was not incorporated into the main campaign.
This brings me to the only downfall of MW2, the single player campaign. Do not get me wrong, it is good, but honestly most players would play through this mode once and probably forget all about it.
When I booted up the game for the first time and started playing the campaign mode, I was bored after the first level and just went straight to multiplayer. Sadly the experience clocks in at about five or six hours and did not really hold any kind of lasting value.There were some really cool “wow” moments, but aside from that, it was felt like a nameless action movie.
Aside from the lame storytelling, MW2 is an amazing game that is worth every penny. Most of the world has already bought the game (as of writing this, the estimated sales of the game are at 4.7 million on launch date).
Infinity Ward has given us one of the most successful games in history. I know I won’t be sleeping any time soon. I’m pretty sure work, school, and my social life will be taking a back seat to all night matches.
