A team of University of La Verne business students placed No. 1 in the nation in the CAPSIM competition among hundreds of other U.S. colleges and universities.

The competition consists of a business simulation operated by Management Simulations.

For the eight-week project, the teams makes weekly decisions for their businesses and how they function.

The decisions are then entered online and they compete with business students from more than 500 colleges across the nation.

Senior business students Branden Rademacher, Shannon Jones, Robert Villas and Kevin Randall made up Team Erie, the winning team and one of six teams advised by Janis Dietz, professor of business.

“It’s really rewarding to see the work of four years come together,” said Rademacher, a senior business major.

“This game allows students to use all the skills they learned in management, marketing, finance and operations,” said Dietz.

La Verne allows senior business students to participate in this project to fulfill their senior project requirement.

Three of the six teams were ranked in the top 10 at least once during the eight-week span of the competition.

“The game taught us more than any other class, writing a paper or an internship would have done,” Rademacher said.

He added that the game involves using everything they’ve learned in previous classes as well as a little bit of luck in making the right decisions.

The top 10 rankings are in eight different categories.

The students who played the game agree that the best thing to come out of the game was learning teamwork.

“It really taught me (to) trust,” Rademacher said.

“The key is communication” said Nataly Escobar, a senior international business major.

She added that having faith in her teammates was also important.
