In an effort to spread some holiday cheer to children in the community, the Associated Students of the University of La Verne are carrying out a toy drive until Dec. 7.
All toys collected will be donated to the McKinley Children’s Center located in San Dimas.
“We started a new philanthropy committee so we decided that since the McKinley Children’s Center is local why not help out the children there,” Stephanie Alon, ASULV senator of the College of Education, said.
The McKinley Children’s Center provides support, counseling and education to children who have been faced with abuse, neglect or abandonment.
The center is currently treating more than 200 children.
Eighty-eight of those children are living on the San Dimas campus.
Children at the McKinley Children’s Center range from 6 to 18 years of age.
“We thought the toy drive would be good to do,” Alon said.
ASULV is asking for new, unopened toys this holiday season for both boys and girls of all age groups.
They ask that the toys steer clear from portraying violence. Also, if possible, ASULV asks that all participants provide a gift receipt with the toy they donate.
“There really is not a price range for the toys, just reasonable,” Alon said. “A range of toys for different age groups is best since the center has all age range.”
“For more information there are fliers around campus with the donation guidelines, etc,” Alon said.
Students and faculty are welcome to drop off toys at the ASULV office located on the first floor of the Campus Center in the Office of Student Life. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Unfortunately we have collected no toys so far, but we are still looking around for participants,” Ryan Taketomo, ASULV senator-at-large, said.
“If you have toys or know somebody that has toys, please take them to the ASULV office,” Taketomo said.
“I think it is really good that we are reaching out in philanthropic ways in the community,” Krishne Chelliah, ASULV senator-at-large, said.
“Hopefully the children will have a positive reaction and be really happy when they receive the toys,” Chelliah said.
“We are going to start reaching out to other organizations and families to donate,” she said.
