ULV dance team hopes to grow on campus

The University of La Verne’s dance team started its search for new members Sept. 20 and since then has added seven first-time members to its ranks.

Though this was the first time trying out for many participants, most of the workshops’ participants were not freshmen.

“We’re glad they came out, because they’re really good,” Courtney Gooden, dance team co-captain, said.

The team held a workshop and auditions on Sept. 20 and 22. Approximately 25 students participated. Out of the 25, 16 went on to the final audition.

“We’re looking forward to working together with such a solid team of girls,” Daniella Villegas, dance team co-captain said.

The new members bring diverse dance training, such as hip-hop, lyrical and jazz.

The selection of new members was based on dancers’ performances in workshops and their auditions.

Two former members of the ULV dance team, Sabrina Martinez and Jolene Rojas served as judges for the dance team. Judges said they looked for basic dance skills and proficiency at picking up the routines.

“The girls already have their criteria laid out for them,” said Eugene Shang, dance team adviser. “They were then able to do all the scoring during auditions themselves.”

ULV’s dance team was established to provide entertainment and to promote school spirit. Different from spirit squad or cheer groups, which are bound to traditional chants and cheers, the dance team is focused on performance and entertaining through dance.

One thing that has helped the ULV dance team to develop its reputation on campus is its association with organizations such as the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority, the Black Student Union and Campus Activities Board.

The dance team has two upcoming concerts in the works, a Christmas-themed winter concert to be held in the Campus Center in December and a spring concert.

Additionally, the dance team performs at homecoming, basketball games, volleyball games and half-time shows.
