To end the first week of classes for the spring semester, the Campus Activities Board treated University of La Verne students to a We Shot the Moon concert. The concert was the final event of the “Welcome Back” week.
“I think it was a great way to close out the week’s events, and it got people excited for the first weekend of the semester. It also helped people get away from class after a long first week,” Michael Lindsey, CAB concert chair, said.
The band, originally from San Diego, has a list of tour dates all on college campuses from La Verne to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Saint Leo, Fla.
“It was a fun and exciting event. Having a live band on campus was very chill,” Scott Jones, sophomore liberal studies major, said.
Although only a handful of students came out to the Campus Center Ballroom for the event, We Shot the Moon treated it like a sold-out show.
“We’re excited to be here in your quaint little town,” said band member Jonathan Jones, who played the entire show barefoot.
The four-man band played some of their songs “Woke Her Up” and “Miracle.” The band’s energy was contagious and soon they had the students standing up, clapping and dancing along with the group.
“They were a chill group and they seemed really humble. I liked how they tried to include the crowd while they performed,” said freshman business major Ariel Devore.
One student was overheard saying to another that her hands hurt from clapping so much.
CAB shirts and towels were thrown out to the eager crowd that jumped and fought to get a hold on one of the bright yellow giveaways.
“I think a concert allows students to listen to music they might not have been exposed to otherwise. The free music and food draw them out but maybe they’ll end up loving that band and trying something new,” sophomore English major and CAB Comedy Chair Ally Schultz said of the benefits of having on campus concerts.
The band was selling CDs, at what band member Paul Wheatley called a college student discount for just $5 instead of the normal $10. Members of the band joked that with a deal like that they would buy two or three CDs. We Shot the Moon’s songs can be downloaded from their website, weshotthemoon.com.
