Suspect still at large in Tuesday petty purse theft from Hoover

The La Verne Police Department is looking for the man suspected of stealing a purse from the Hoover Building at around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The suspect is described as a 30 to 35-year-old African-American male, about 5’10” and 180 pounds.

On Tuesday afternoon, Priscilla Ogas left her purse under a desk in the Hoover building when she stepped out to check her car.

“When I came upstairs he bumped into me and was stuffing something under his shirt,” Ogas said. “My first instinct was to scream, ‘He stole my purse’.”

Ogas called out for help after noticing the purse was gone and the suspect started to run.

Two faculty members and a student pursued the suspect out of the Hoover building as he ran across Third Street to Parking Lot A, where he drove off in a brown Chevy Astro van.

Witnesses were able to get a license plate number from the van as the suspect drove away.

“We encourage all the students and employess not to leave their belongings out in the open,” Jeff Clark, assistant director of Campus Safety and Transportation, said.

“Unfortunately bad elements come onto campus and take advantage of the good nature of the people on campus.”

Witnesses describe the suspect as bald with a tidy beard. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and tan pants.

The investigation has been turned over to LVPD Detective Michael Martinez for further investigation.

Anyone who has information is encouraged to contact the La Verne Police Department at 909-569-1913, ext. 2956.
