The Leopards beat the Concordia Tornadoes 8-5 Thursday to advance to the next round of the NCAA West Regional playoffs.
The team suffered a loss a day prior to the win. La Verne lost to the Whitworth Pirates 5-0 Wednesday at Linfield College in Oregon.
“They did the little things when asked to and we didn’t. That was the difference in the game,” head coach Scott Winterburn said.
La Verne threatened in the top of the fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out, but two pop ups kept the game scoreless.
“That’s kind of the difference in the way the offense was last night,” Winterburn said. “It was probably the turning point in the game for us.”
The Pirates opened a 2-0 lead in the bottom of fifth; then Scheibe slammed the door shut the rest of the game, retiring 12 of the last 13 batters.
“Our pitcher pitched great and their pitcher pitched better,” Winterburn said. “They threw strikes, played defense and ran great offense.”
Senior Jacob Ludvik and junior Albert Ramos finished with two hits while Schick finished with nine hits, four runs, two walks and one strikeout in 6 1/3 innings.
Junior Matt Ashby faced two batters, then senior Ross Hebert finished the game with one run on two hits and one strikeout.
Scheibe had a complete game shutout with six hits, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Seven Whitworth starters are underclassmen, including Scheibe and short stop Nick Motsinger, who had one walk, hit, RBI and stolen base.
“Our plan is to come in today (Thursday) and try our hardest to stay within ourselves and play our brand of baseball,” Winterburn said.
This is the first time the Leopard baseball team has gone to the regionals since 2008.
With the win Thursday, the Leopards live to fight another day, with a game at noon Friday. Their next opponent is to be announced.
