Senior psychology major Katie Barrese takes to baking as her stress reliever.
Barrese, psychology major, and cross-country and track runner enjoys turning up the music and getting out her measuring cups to create a masterpiece dessert, even if it takes all day.
“For Christmas, this past year, I made Christmas trees cupcakes that took literally all day to make, for just 10 cupcakes,” Barrese said.
“My mom has always been the cook in the family. We always have family dinners, but as for me I’m a perfectionist,” Barrese said. “With baking, I can get the measurement just right.”
“Baking is a character trait for her in general,” Frank Barrese, Barrese’s father, said.
“She’s a pretty focused and precise sort of person, so baking is ideal because you have to follow the directions completely,”
Baking became a hobby for Barrese after returning to California her sophomore year.
Barrese joined the Leopards as a transfer sophomore student, after attending Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla.
Barrese finds many of her delicious desserts on the popular website Pinterest.
Barrese found one of her favorite treats, saltine cracker toffee, on this website.
“Saltine cracker toffees are always a big hit,” Barrese said.
Saltine cracker toffee is a delicious sweet and salty dessert made up of caramel, chocolate chips, walnuts and of course saltine crackers.
Saltine Cracker Toffee, Reese’s Peanut Butter Bars, cookies and decorative cupcakes are Barrese’s specialties.
“She made some cupcakes that are practically fancy with toasted marshmallow. She even cracked out the torch to brown the marshmallow. It tasted great and looked really cool,” Frank Barrese said.
“I’m a big sweets person, that’s why I bake as opposed to cook because I don’t like food as much as I love sugar,” Katie Barrese said.
Barrese loves every kind of candy, but Junior Mints are her absolute favorite.
Andrea Arceo, senior child development major who runs track with Barrese, enjoys seeing what sweets Barrese has prepared each weekend.
“I have a huge sweet tooth. I don’t get to go home as often as Katie does, so when she brings back goodies to school it makes me want to go home and bake too,” Arceo said.
Baking will always be a way for Barrese to escape the stressful world college students go through on a daily basis.
Besides baking Barrese’s other hobbies include fashion and cross-country.
Barrese said she would love to some day work in New York City in fashion.
