Provost Greg Dewey has resigned from his post at the University to assume the presidency at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences next year, University of La Verne President Devorah Lieberman announced Tuesday.

Dewey, who has served as provost and chief academic officer at ULV since October 2009, will step down Jan. 1, but will remain with the University through the end of the school year.

Dewey’s colleagues seemed thrilled with the news of this new chapter for Dewey.

“This is a great move for him,” said Jonathan Reed, dean of the College Arts and Sciences, who will replace Dewey as interim provost in January.

“It’s a move up and it’s at a college that is very much in line with his disciplinary background in the health sciences,” he said.

The Provost is responsible for ensuring the quality of academics across the University’s four colleges.

Dewey, in particular, oversaw the implementation of the La Verne Experience and the development of the 2020 Vision, the University’s most recent academic strategy.

“He was very much aligned with wanting to help lead the University in ways that made the University of La Verne a better university,” Lieberman said.

Lieberman chose Reed to serve as the interim provost starting Jan. 1.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve the faculty and the students of the University,” Reed said. “Moving from the College of Arts and Sciences to being involved in more aspects of the University and the other colleges is something I’m very excited about.”

An archaeologist, author and professor of religion, Reed has worked at ULV for 22 years, lending his expertise to administrators for many of them.

“I’m looking forward to working with Jonathan Reed,” said Beatriz Gonzalez, associate provost for faculty affairs. “I think it’s important for all of us in this time that obviously includes great change in many aspects to really work together in a strategic way, seeing the places that we all come together, focusing on those areas and focusing on our strengths.”

A national search for a permanent provost will begin next September, with ULV officials hoping to have the new Provost in office by fall of 2015.
