Sororities welcome newbies

The women of Greek life came together last weekend to welcome potential new members as they began their journey through formal sorority recruitment.

The women of Alpha Omicron Pi, Iota Delta, Phi Sigma Sigma and Sigma Kappa all offered bids to new members Feb. 23; 88 of the women who went through recruitment joined Greek life by the end of the weekend.

“I believe Greek Life is increasing on campus due to the combination of the amount of social media usage by Greek organizations and the amount of Greek activities hosted on campus. It’s a trend not only among the freshmen class, but among all students who want to get involved with something that’s greater than themselves,” said Melissa Procopio, junior business administration major and president of Sigma Kappa.

The weekend began with an informational night on Feb. 20 in the Campus Center, where the College Panhellenic Association explained the process of recruitment to all of the potential new members.

CPA hosted the rest of the weekend at the Sheraton Hotel, where women met the sororities and had the opportunity to see which organization would be the best fit for them. The number of women who came through sorority recruitment can also be attributed to CPA’s new means of advertising.

“This year CPA’s Sigma Rho Chis tried their best to publicize on social media, in person and around the campus,” said Sarah Barthel, junior English major and CPA vice president of recruitment. “Everyone is constantly refreshing their Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram pages, and we were able to keep recruitment constantly on everyone’s minds.”

All of the women bonded over the weekend as they went through the process.

“The most memorable part about this year’s recruitment is the relationships that I have been able to build with women that are not in my organization,” Barthel said.

“Despite our affiliations, we are all Greek together.”
