From students who just wanted to see a great show, to die-hard fans who painted Big Sean’s adlibs and catch phrases on their shirts, last Thursday’s concert had it all.
Hundreds of students and Big Sean fans piled into the Fox Theater in Pomona for an eclectic night of music at the University’s annual LaVernapalooza event.
Big Sean headlined the show, entertaining the crowd with hits such as “A$$ (Dance),” “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay,” “My Last” and “Beware.”
“It was awesome,” junior mathematics major Cristina Terrazas said. “His performance was amazing. Out of the three years I have been to this show, this year was the best.”
Big Sean also performed popular radio songs in which he was featured such as Drake’s “All Me” and the bass bumping “Mercy” by his G.O.O.D. Music label-mate, Kanye West.
Fans in attendance prepared for Big Sean with opening acts 3OH!3 and Bas.
3OH!3 played their crunk-influenced, high energy rock hits such as “Don’t Trust Me,” “Starstrukk,” and “My First Kiss.”
“We love coming back and playing for kids,” co-lead singer and co-president of 3OH3! Nathaniel Motte said. “Usually they are great shows and they are a party atmosphere which is why we make music.”
3OH!3 also played their own rendition of the Katy Perry single “Dark Horse” and covered the Scorpions’ classic rock n’ roll hit “Rock You Like a Hurricane.”
Rapper Bas was the first of the opening acts and was brought onboard for the show by Big Sean.
Bas is a fairly new artist who brings a combination of soulfully smooth and New York-influenced hip-hop.
Bas performed his J. Cole featured single, “My N**** Made Bail,” as well as other work from his album and mixtapes.
ASULV and Campus Activities Board hosted the event with the help of Director of Student Life Barbara Mulligan and Associate Director of Student Life Angie Anderson.
After two different student surveys, ASULV and CAB were able to book Big Sean and 3OH!3 for an unforgettable night of music.
“It was a good time,” senior criminology major Olga Saldivar said. “I’m glad my last LaVernapalooza was so successful.”
