Commentary: Fine facilities are underused

Commentary: Fine facilities are underused
Daniel Hargis, Associate Sports Editor At most colleges and universities, gyms and workout rooms are open for most of the day for the students to use at any time. However, the University of La Verne is not most colleges and universities, as the gym and workout room hours are minimal. Our gym does not have any listed hours to be used for recreational basketball, so if you want to play with friends you...

Commentary: Music industry is hitting a sour note

Commentary: Music industry is hitting a sour note
Branden del Rio, News Editor Anybody who knows me personally knows that I take my music very seriously. I keep my collection of almost 2,600 songs on my iPod, which is constantly in my pocket or sitting right in front of me. I also take pride in knowing that of those 2,600 songs I have acquired about 95 percent of them by legal means. I have either bought them on iTunes, bought tangible CDs as soon...

Field of broken dreams

Ben Hines Field is slated to be torn down at the end of the baseball season in May to make room for a new parking lot. The University finds it necessary to build the lot to go along with the new dorms that are to be finished by fall 2012. When making plans for the new lot, ULV seems to have forgotten to take into consideration that multiple teams play on the baseball field: men’s and women’s soccer...

Budget cuts are hurting environment

Budget cuts are hurting environment
Editorial cartoon by Anthony Juarez The United States Senate approved the 2011 federal budget plan last week, an action that has been long overdue and wrought with problems. However, the approval came with one questionable addition. An order for the Interior Department to lift protections for gray wolves in Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon and Utah was attached to the federal budget plan to ensure...

Students request new food options

Students request new food options
Editorial cartoon by Anthony Juarez The digestion of all on-campus residents is about to be affected. With midterms almost behind us and only a month left of classes, the University of La Verne has started searching for a new food provider to cook for the masses. Committees have met with four different food providers for a chance to take over Sodexo’s position. Now that there might be a change in...

Fan violence needs to stop

In sports there are fans who the teams rely on to show support by attending games, buying merchandise and even trash-talking with the fans of rival teams. Sometimes the trash-talking can escalate to violence, like the incident that happened after the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Opening Day victory against their rival the San Francisco Giants. After the game, Giants fan Bryan Stow was brutally attacked by...

Commentary: 3-D movies are not necessary

Commentary: 3-D movies are not necessary
Kristen Campbell, Editor in Chief I go to the movies quite often. I probably go too often if you ask my friends; I have seen the movies most television previews advertise. I enjoy being entertained and escaping from the world for two hours during a stressful week. Throughout all of my movie-going, I have noticed an annoying, and some may say alarming, trend among movies. Picture this scenario: you...

We’ve grown in LGBT tolerance

Although the University of La Verne may not be exclusively known for its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups most people know that we have one. Unlike some university campuses the LGBT community here has an on-campus presence: we have the Rainbow Alliance club. The club itself has more than 30 members and has faculty support. It is great that ULV students feel that they can openly and safely...

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, As a very proud grandparent of a student that attends the University of La Verne, I would like to comment how much I truly enjoy all the articles that are written by the students (editors) in your weekly newspaper and look forward to reading it page by page every week. It is exciting and so refreshing to know that this younger generation is truly interested in their community. From the...

No blood for oil

On March 28, President Barack Obama addressed the nation to answer the questions surrounding why the United States is taking part in the airstrikes in Libya. In a recent interview with NBC News, Obama defended his decision for the U.S. to intervene in Libya by stating that actions had to be made quickly to save civilian lives. This need for immediate action is the reason why Obama did not seek authorization...
