La Verne earns double OT win

Justin Davis-Battle Staff Writer After a long physical battle and two overtimes, La Verne’s men’s soccer team earned their first win of the season against the Occidental Tigers, 1-0. It was in the 114th minute when Nahavi Mendoza broke the 0-0 tie by scoring the game-winning goal to defeat the Tigers. Mendoza played very well for the Leopards throughout the entire game with a total of nine shots...

Commentary:Baseball’s beauty to be shown in October

Commentary:Baseball’s beauty to be shown in October
Elsie Ramos, Sports Editor Last semester I wrote a commentary piece about the 2010 Major League Baseball season, in which I said that most likely it would be the same teams going to the playoffs this year. I was not completely wrong, but there were some teams that took me by surprise. The American League has the usual suspects: the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays fighting for the AL East and...

Football drops first game of the season, 59-14

Nolasco Pesina Staff Writer Despite losing their first game of the season to Azusa Pacific, 59-14–in the first meeting of the two schools since 2003–the Leopards showed potential in what is to come for the rest of the season. The Cougars came into Saturday night 1-0, beating the University of San Diego 42-14 in their first game last weekend putting up 481 total yards, 156 yards passing and 325...

Leopards look to start season with a win

Christopher Barnes-Baxter Staff Writer Last year was a tough season for the Leopards football team, ending with a record of 0-9, part of an overall 11-game losing streak. Despite the discouraging record, many players have gained new hope in this year’s team, the key difference being the new offensive plays. There has been a lot of buzz about the new beefed up offensive line, with players coming from...

Freshmen to boost men’s soccer

Justin Davis-Battle Staff Writer Coming off of a 4-15 record last year, the men’s soccer team is looking for a fresh start this season. Many players and fans from last year knew that the team’s defense was the achilles heel that led to their poor record. But the team hopes that will change with the return of all-SCIAC players Taylor Hart and Angel De Alba, two defenders who were unable to play...

Spirit squad adds new members

Elsie Ramos Sports Editor With a new group of women, a new coach and a new set of routines the University of La Verne’s Spirit Squad is looking to make sure every student is proud to be a Leopard. A final set of tryouts were held on Sept. 2 to determine the final squad, but adding new members to the squad is not the only issue current members are dealing with. With no money coming in from the University,...

Off season workouts help jump start new seasons

Grady Lee Thomas Staff Writer The off-season is a time for rest and relaxation, but don’t tell that to the athletes at the University of La Verne who use the down time to work out daily and bond with teammates. “By meeting up and playing games together during the summer, we were able to gel as a unit,” said John Leggett Jr., junior guard for the men’s basketball team. “The two months of prep...
