The busy life of the average college student leaves little time for a student to get his or her daily physical workout to stay healthy. Many universities have on-campus gyms accessible for their students and faculty, which is a huge convenience.

Many of La Verne’s athletic teams fundraise so that they can travel to far away places and stay overnight. This is extra work that the student athletes do not need to deal with.

Bulldozed baseball, soccer and football fields will eventually give way to the spanking new residence hall and a parking lot.

Wednesday marked the annual La Verne Athletic Associates Barbecue, held for every student athlete on campus on the field of Ortmayer Stadium.

Fences surrounding Ben Hines Field were removed Tuesday as the University of La Verne begins construction on a parking lot along First Street to serve the new residence hall slated to open fall 2012. The building will house 387 students as well as retail stores.

The University of La Verne plans to build new athletics facilities on its Campus West property, located south of Arrow Highway and west of Wheeler Avenue, no later than Dec. 31, 2013.

The campaign to save Ben Hines Field continued Tuesday. This time almost all athletic teams came out to show their support.

Ben Hines Field is slated to be torn down at the end of the baseball season in May to make room for a new parking lot.
