Raise endowment, not tuition

On Nov. 4 the Board of Trustees approved a 6.5 percent undergraduate tuition increase for the 2012-2013 academic year. Reasons for this increase range from a need to sustain education programs to improve the image of the University. For the 2011-2012 school year, tuition at the University of La Verne approximates $31,300. This is compared to Chapman at about $40,234, Pepperdine at about $40,752 and...

Athletes’ travel should be on ULV

Many of La Verne’s athletic teams fundraise so that they can travel to far away places and stay overnight. This is extra work that the student athletes do not need to deal with. La Verne is a private university, meaning the expenses to attend are quite steep compared with the state’s publicly funded California State or University of California systems. With such high tuition, one would think that...

Dear Editor, In response to last week’s editorial about the Spotted Pig on the Opinions page (“This little piggy has a problem,” Oct. 15), I would like to say that that campaign is not merely an effort to get your pocket change. It is about getting students to give back. It’s an endeavor to instill in us a practice of giving that can impact our world. I believe helping those around us who are...

This little piggy has a problem

Recently many faculty members and students arrived to their offices, mailboxes and dorm rooms to discovered clear, plastic piggy banks with a note inside. The note explained the pig was from the University of La Verne Advancement department’s new Spotted Pig Campaign. The Spotted Pig Campaign was designed to encourage students and faculty to get into a habit of giving back to the University. At the...

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, Why is ULV involved in trying to collect money for scholarships at a minor league hockey game through the auctioning of worn jerseys? During a recent Ontario Reign game (for which ULV liberally passed out tickets to students, faculty, staff and alumni) one of the players punched his opponent, knocking off his helmet, continuing to pummel him with his fists, over and over again. It was...
