The small University Chapel was filled with the sound of piano keys and the voices of students as they sang solos for an audience of about 20 people last month.

International award-winning pianist Grace Xia Zhao entertained a small group of students and faculty Friday, as she played one of the most difficult pieces known to musicians in the Steinway studio.
“A free show worth every penny,” joked musicians Roberto Catalano and Carlos Calvo during their acoustic guitar concert last week in the Campus Center Ballroom.
The rhythmic beating of drums can be heard throughout campus, a sound that transports students to a far off land through intricate beats and silences. The drumming is coming from the West African Drumming class, taught by music department coordinator Steve Biondo.
The University Chapel was host to visiting alumni Saturday as they performed various pieces in a special appearance.
The University of La Verne’s music department present “The Soloist” featuring Dennis Trembly and Grace Xia Zhao, at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 in the Campus Center Ballroom A.
This January the University of La Verne will unveil the renovated Founders Auditorium. Completion of the long-anticipated revamp of this historic performance hall will be accompanied by a renaming of the hall after University President Steve Morgan and his wife, Ann.
The music department hopes new choir director James Calhoun will be a magnet for students, attracting them to the choir program.
Jazz was in the air on Monday as Professor of Music Reed Gratz played the piano alongside his bandmates.
