Despite many chances, the Leopards could not overcome a four-run eighth inning by the Redlands Bulldogs, falling 7-6 on Saturday at Ben Hines Field in the most important game of the season for both teams.
Saturday was a rough day for the softball team as it dropped both games in a doubleheader against Redlands with scores of 5-2 in game one and 11-8 in game two at Wheeler Park.
They are ranked in the top 15 nationally in two polls and are trying to win their fifth Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in a row, yet they do not get recognized half as much as the other less successful teams on campus do.
La Verne suffered a pair of losses over the weekend against Redlands and Whittier. The Bulldogs dominated the Leopards at the Claremont Club on Friday, 9-0, and the Poets continued dominance on Saturday, winning 7-2.
After a weekend of rainy weather, the sun was out on Tuesday when La Verne took first place in SCIAC No. 3 tournament at Sierra Lakes Golf Course.
To earn a postseason berth, the women’s basketball team needed all four quarters plus overtime to defeat Redlands, 78-77, on a game winning layup by senior forward Emily Carrillo.

The Leopards celebrated senior night for their lone senior Mychal Thomas on Tuesday at Frantz Athletic Court against Redlands, but unfortunately due to a lack of energy, the Leopards fell short 57-46.
In a game which both teams played great smashmouth defense, penalties by the Leopards and big plays from the Redlands Bulldogs’ defense proved to be the deciding factors Saturday as the Bulldogs defeated the Leopards, 27-7.
With little time to practice, the men’s water polo team has had a rough time opening up this season.
