La Verne Ranks High in Degrees to Hispanic Students
At any private university, diversity is paramount. The University of La Verne’s long history of serving a diverse student population appears to be gaining recognition, thanks to one prominent Hispanic publication.
Data gathered from the U.S. Department of Education and published in the May 4, 2009 issue of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education evaluated institutions for the period of July 2007 through June 2008. Results indicate the University of La Verne ranks No. 2 among private California-based institutions in the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic students. The only school awarding a greater number of bachelor’s degrees to that population is the University of Southern California.
The university also ranks No. 1 among private universities in California in bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic students as a percentage of the total number of degrees awarded (35%) — beating even USC, the magazine noted. La Verne also is No. 4 in master’s degrees and No. 5 in doctoral degrees awarded to Hispanics. A total of 633 Hispanic students graduated from the university in 2007/2008.
“We are all very proud of our University and its long history of serving a very diverse student population,” said Homa Shabahang, Ph.D., Vice President of Enrollment Management. “We should all be proud that in addition to serving a very diverse student population, we also help them to succeed in achieving their educational goals and earn their degree at La Verne.”
