Dr. Jonathan L. Reed, a professor of religion for many years and a foremost authority on Mediterranean and early Christian archaeology, has been appointed interim dean of the University of La Verne College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).

Reed joined the university in 1993 and since then has posted numerous academic and other achievements. Recipient of the Excellence in Faculty Teaching Award and the Ellsworth Johnson Service Award, he also was a founding member of the ULV Academy, which recognizes quality research and a clear commitment to advancement of the university.

Reed also is a prolific author, having written many books, articles, and reviews. In fact, he co-wrote a pair of authoritative non-fiction books that have received widespread attention: “In Search of Paul” and “Excavating Jesus.” He also is the author of “Archaeology and the Galilean Jesus.”

His expertise and vast body of work has earned Reed numerous television appearances, including guest expert interviews on The History Channel and cameo appearances in several television documentaries. On the print side, his work has appeared in National Geographic and other high-profile publications.

The versatile faculty member’s background prepared him well for the appointment. He twice has served as acting chair of the Religion and Philosophy Department and served four years as faculty representative to the ULV Board of Trustees. Reed has conducted research at the Albright Institute for Archaeological Research in Jerusalem, the American Academy in Rome, and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.

In his spare time, when he’s not on his hands and knees searching for artifacts in the Middle East, the modern-day Indiana Jones painstakingly sculpts marble using authentic Greek hand tools. He calls the hobby therapeutic and a great way to quiet his mind. As head of CAS, the fruits of Reed’s creative mind will be in great demand.
