Summer Business Camp Helps Local High School Students REACH Greater Heights

June 20, 2012 by University of La Verne

What: More than 50 high school students will call the University of La Verne their home this summer during the 7th Annual REACH Business Camp, a three-week-long program aimed at teaching students business skills and stimulating interest in college.

Lead by Dr. Issam Ghazzawi, associate professor of management, REACH provides underserved high school students exposure to higher education and its application to the business world, as well as guidance on how to make a college career a reality.

Hailing from high schools in neighboring school districts, students are exposed to workshops, seminars and college course work in business subject areas, including management, marketing, economics, finance and accounting.

Students will also have the opportunity to go on guided field trips to the Metropolitan Water District, Southern California Edison and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, among other outings, to gain knowledge on California work resources.

At the culmination of their educational visit, students will develop a unique business plan for a fictitious enterprise, employing business tool components learned at camp, and present in front of a panel of judges.

Divided into teams of five, each will compete for a grand prize of $1000.

From living in La Verne’s residence halls to eating in the cafeteria, students have the privilege of gaining a feel for what college life is like and will be counseled on the necessary steps to take in order to be successful in higher education.

Students selected to participate in the REACH program have demonstrated interest in business education while being at risk of not pursuing higher education.

Staffed by volunteering faculty and community members, The REACH program is funded by the Title V Grant and various organizations, businesses and community members.
