What: As the holiday season approaches, the University of La Verne campus community will be participating in Grow Better Together, a campus-wide event with participants planting gardens, delivering food to local families in need and gathering non-perishable items for food pantries on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Grow Better Together, an event sponsored by La Verne’s Interfaith Student Council, promises to feed the hungry, create relationships with the community, establish a connection with participants and promote a sustainable environment.
This event is part of Better Together, an interfaith nationwide college movement that promotes interfaith collaborative community service. La Verne clubs and organizations will be partnering with off campus entities in support of local sustainable gardens, food distribution to low-income families, and assistance in gathering food for local pantries.
“Our goal is to enhance our connection as a university with the local community,” said Tiffany Koval,
President of the La Verne Interfaith Student Council. She added that this is the first time ISC will be hosting this event.
Entities to receive help include: the La Verne Church of the Bretheren’s Peace and Carrots Garden, Constantine Community Garden and Orchard in San Dimas, Pomona Fellowship Church of the Brethren Community Garden, and Sowing Seeds for Life, an event taking place at Ganesha Park in Pomona.
Prior to departure to the four different sites, all participants will be greeted at University Mall by La Verne President Devorah Lieberman and Tiffany Koval.
“This event seeks to model interfaith cooperation. Students from a variety of religious and non-religious perspectives are intentionally working together across their differences to address community issues,” said University Chaplain Zandra Wagoner. “The event is an affirmation that we truly are better together.”
