- My major training and interests are in the areas of
ecology, natural history and evolution. As an
undergraduate, I devoted much of my study to marine
biology. In graduate school my interests shifted to the
biology of desert plants and animals. Since
completing my graduate training I have pursued
interests in grassland ecology, herpetology, coral reef
ecology, tropical biology and the biology of venomous
animals. The majority of my research heavily involves
undergraduate students.
I teach a wide variety of courses including the following:
Animal Biology, Invertebrate Zoology, Environmental
Biology, Evolution, Research Methods, Tropical Biology,
Desert and Mountain Biology, and Religion, Ethics and
Sustainibility. Also, each year I teach a course in
Venomous Animals of the Mojave Desert for the Desert
Institute of Joshua Tree National Park.
Finally, in the past three years I have offered, or
participated in, January field courses in the countries of
Belize, Mexico (Baja California), and Ecuador. In
addition to the normal class activities of these courses,
three students have conducted senior research
projects.
