Violinist serenades Davenport

Posted Feb. 22, 2008

Students were treated to a solo violin performance in Davenport Dining Hall on Valentine’s Day. Lucy Lu, who has played the violin since age 2, was first introduced to the instrument by her father in China. In 2001 she opened the Lucy Lu School of Music for students of all ages. Lu is a graduate of Pasadena City College and currently attends Cal State Los Angeles. Lu played several songs including the popular Celine Dion song “My Heart Will Go On.”

Valentine’s Day landing on a Thursday this year signaled that instead of cozying up with your Valentine, you had to cozy up with your professors because it was just another school day around the University of La Verne.

For those students who spend their weekdays grabbing lunch at Davenport Dining Hall, however, Valentine’s Day offered something a little different.

Instead of listening to the sounds of other students at neighboring tables chatting away, they were given the opportunity to hear the beautiful sounds of a violin being played by Lucy Lu, who has been playing violin since she was about 3 years old.
From 11 a..m. to 1 p.m. students and faculty who dined at Davenport enjoyed “Serenade Via Violin.”

“It’s a pleasant change.” freshman Mike Shather said.

Lu played several songs, including the “Titanic” theme song, a favorite that everyone should be familiar with, “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion.

Lu started her performance standing in the corner of Davenport by the tray return.

As lunch continued Lu found that her location was difficult because many students had to cross her path to return their dishes and trays.

As lunch got busier and Davenport started to fill up with hungry students, Lu made her rounds to various lunch tables with a smile on her face as she played her violin.

The question was whether or not this was a welcomed change of pace in Davenport.

Students seemed a bit confused at first about the performance, but as the music played on they clapped in appreciation for Lu’s talent.

Davenport was also filled with faculty and campus staff members.

Several members of the staff approached Lu as she played and expressed their gratitude for her performance on the ULV campus.

“I like this type of music,” said Mike Nunez, director of campus safety and transportation.

Lu works at a music studio in Alhambra that gives lessons in violin, cello and piano.

While Lu enjoys playing the piano as well, she is best at playing the violin.
