Difficulty meeting parent (or student) contributing due to unusual expenses

Reasons/Scenarios that warrant this type of Appeals

  • Elder care expenses can be considered only if elder is not already reported in the family size on the FAFSA
  • Medical – must be paid medical expenses that exceed 11% of adjusted gross income to be considered
  • Private elementary or secondary tuition for younger siblings

Documentation Required

  • Appeal Review Request Form
  • Supporting Documentation. Note for medical; please only provide documentation of medical expenses paid. DO NOT PROVIDE copies of medical tests, diagnosis or other confidential information
  • Statement from private school itemizing amount paid, by you, in the 2015 calendar year, for 2017-2018 Appeals

Inflated Parent Income on FAFSA

Reasons/Scenarios that warrant this type of Appeals

  • Example: Receipt of a one-time capital gain in prior year

  • Complete the income projection sections (depends on form that we use)
  • Receipts or other documentation to show how the one-time source of income was used or whether it is in current savings or investments reported on the FAFSA
