{"id":5537,"date":"2016-12-12T16:10:58","date_gmt":"2016-12-13T00:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/financial-aid\/?page_id=5537"},"modified":"2022-07-05T11:43:17","modified_gmt":"2022-07-05T18:43:17","slug":"independent-student","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/financial-aid\/appeals-process\/independent-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Appeal to be Considered an Independent Student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students who do not meet the federal criteria for independent status, but wish to have their special circumstances reviewed may appeal to be considered independent.<\/p>\n<h3>Common Scenarios that may qualify a student for Independent Status<\/h3>\n<p>The student has been removed from the family home by the state<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student is in an abusive family environment (e.g., sexual, physical, or mental abuse or other forms of domestic violence)<\/li>\n<li>The student has been abandoned by parents<\/li>\n<li>The location of the parent or parents is unknown<\/li>\n<li>The incarceration or institutionalization of both parents<\/li>\n<li>Parent(s) are lacking the physical or mental capacity to raise the child<\/li>\n<li>Both parent(s) hospitalized for an extended period<\/li>\n<li>The student lives in an unsuitable household (e.g., child removed from the household and placed in foster care)<\/li>\n<li>A married student\u2019s spouse dies or student gets divorced<\/li>\n<li>Other unique circumstances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Please note, per the U.S. Department of Education, the following circumstances do not merit a dependency override, either alone or in combination:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Parents refuse to contribute to the student\u2019s education;<\/li>\n<li>Parents are unwilling to provide information on the application for verification;<\/li>\n<li>Parents do not claim the student as a dependent for income tax purposes;<\/li>\n<li>Student demonstrates total self-sufficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>How to Appeal<\/h3>\n<p>You may appeal by doing the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Contact the financial aid office via phone, email, or in person to request a phone or in person meeting with a Financial Aid Counselor.<\/li>\n<li>In this meeting please be prepared to describe your situation in detail and provide supporting documentation (see below).<\/li>\n<li>As each case is unique, the financial aid counselor will guide you through the process, including any additional documentation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Documentation Required<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A signed statement detailing your situation in detail, including:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Detailed description of your circumstances;<\/li>\n<li>Your current relationship with your parent(s);<\/li>\n<li>Date of last contact with your parent(s);<\/li>\n<li>Whether you have requested your parent to assist you in applying for financial aid<\/li>\n<li>Whether you were claimed as a dependent on your parent(s) or someone else\u2019s tax returns;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Three (3) signed letters of support<\/strong><br \/>\nThese letters should be from adults familiar with your case, such as a teacher, counselor, medical authority, member of the clergy, prison administrator, government agency, or court and should establish the usual circumstances.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If applicable, additional evidence<\/strong> in support of your request such as court orders, police reports and\/or other official documentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students who do not meet the federal criteria for independent status, but wish to have their special circumstances reviewed may appeal to be considered independent.
