{"id":3547,"date":"2017-04-26T22:54:19","date_gmt":"2017-04-26T22:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/oise\/?page_id=3547"},"modified":"2025-03-14T15:43:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T22:43:11","slug":"employment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/issa\/employment\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Employment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Forms regarding employment may be found <a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/issa\/forms\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All employment for F-1 international students, whether on-campus or off-campus, must be authorized by the Office Of International Services and Study Abroad (ISSA).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>On-Campus Employment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>International students are allowed to work on-campus during their first year of study, provided they maintain their F-1 status. It is important to note that jobs listed as Federal Work Study (FWS), are federally funded and not available to international students. However, positions categorized as &#8220;Non-Federal Work Study&#8221; are available.<\/p>\n<p>To find available positions, students must visit the University of La&nbsp;Verne Human Resources website and click on <a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Employment Openings<\/a>. International students can work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week while school is in session, and up to 28 hours per week during breaks or summer.<\/p>\n<p>Once hired, international students must\u00a0obtain a Job Offer Letter from the Human Resources department, confirming that an on-campus job has been offered. The student will then email the Job Offer Letter and submit a request to the ISSA for a Social Security Number <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/pages\/responsepage.aspx?id=H8QfSBiGy0SqfklH1-ZlotFNTgh0wDFMs7FX_4xpc-ZURFpDUVhISVlGSFBIVklWWUI3WkNFV1kzUSQlQCN0PWcu&amp;route=shorturl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verification letter<\/a>.The ISSA will issue a letter confirming that the student has secured on-campus employment and is a full-time student in good standing. Finally, the student must take a completed and printed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/forms\/ss-5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">SS-5<\/a> application form, a current I-20, a\u00a0copy of their passport, a\u00a0copy of their visa, a\u00a0print out of their current I-94, the Job offer letter from Human Resources, and the\u00a0SSN Verification letter from ISSA to the Social Security Administration (SSA) office to request a Social Security Number.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Off-Campus Employment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>International students can work off-campus after completing one year in their program, but the employment must be related to their area of study and must be authorized by ISSA and USCIS.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/issa\/apply-for-cpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/issa\/immigration-resources\/how-to-apply-for-opt\/\">Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/issa\/applying-for-stem-opt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Optional Practical Training Extension for STEM Students (STEM OPT)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Off-Campus employment based on Economic Hardship (To discuss this in detail, please email us at international@laverne.edu)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Volunteering vs. Unpaid Internship<\/h3>\n<p>Under the U.S. Department of Labor Laws, &#8220;employee&#8221; includes anyone providing services for wages or other compensation, such as free housing or food. Unpaid work may still count as employment for F-1 visa holders.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;volunteer&#8221; is someone who offers services for civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons without expectation of compensation. Volunteer work must meet these criteria: no expectation of pay, no displacement of a genuine employee, no repetition of paid services, and work for a non-profit organization serving public, religious, or humanitarian purposes. Volunteers cannot expect to be hired or paid for similar services in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forms regarding employment may be found here.
