He explained how he was inspired to write about topics he felt needed to be shared, including intersectionality between multiple identities and communities he\u2019s belonged to, and inclusive topics he wished had more representation in mainstream culture.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13053\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13053\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13053\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/Frederick-Douglass-speaker-Bryan-Washngton-661x992.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Frederick Douglass lecture series speaker Bryan Washington\" width=\"217\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/Frederick-Douglass-speaker-Bryan-Washngton-661x992.jpg 661w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/Frederick-Douglass-speaker-Bryan-Washngton-799x1200.jpg 799w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/Frederick-Douglass-speaker-Bryan-Washngton-768x1153.jpg 768w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/Frederick-Douglass-speaker-Bryan-Washngton-512x768.jpg 512w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/Frederick-Douglass-speaker-Bryan-Washngton-270x405.jpg 270w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/02\/Frederick-Douglass-speaker-Bryan-Washngton.jpg 1020w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bryan Washington<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also discussed themes of race, identity, and family explored in his debut book <em>Lot<\/em>, which tells the story of a young man growing up in Houston, a city that holds a myriad of diverse neighborhoods, and his exploration growing up in these communities through ear-catching prose.<\/p>\n<p>When discussing his writing with the audience, he shared the importance of telling stories that were honest and true without capitalizing on trauma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere can be a compulsion to lean into socioeconomic and historical stress on diverse communities as a justification to putting them on the screen,\u201d Washington said. \u201cThat felt icky and challenging, because you can\u2019t divorce socioeconomic and white supremacy struggles\u2026but I didn\u2019t want to make it a primary component.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, he shared prominent ideas and sample sections from his novel <em>Memorial<\/em>, about family, home, cuisine, and love intersecting the Black, Japanese, and queer community. He provided his personal experiences as a mixed-race individual to the audience and how it informed his writing.<\/p>\n<p>He left the audience with questions to consider: How can we bring feeling and clarity into our work? How can we call forth the clearest iterations we want to tell?<\/p>\n<p>Washington compelled the audience to find what they care about and bring it to life, because what\u2019s important can be shared overtime and matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the story you\u2019re trying to share best. It\u2019s your story. You know what it is,\u201d Washington said to a student in the audience inquiring about his confidence to pursue his novels.<\/p>\n<p>The Frederick Douglass Human Rights Lecture Series, which honors the legacy of the great abolitionist, is an annual event at the University of La&nbsp;Verne that has been operating since 2014. It serves as a platform for distinguished speakers to share their experiences and ideas on issues related to human rights and social justice.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on Bryan Washington, please
