The work finds its roots in Montgomery\u2019s service in the U.S. Army during the Second Gulf War. \u201cI couldn\u2019t stop in the middle of the desert to take a picture,\u201d he recalls of his 2003 deployment. \u201cSo I would just take pictures as I was driving, one-handed\u2026 and midway through that tour, I just stared at them and thought, \u2018Let me reevaluate this.\u2019 This might be something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That realization became the foundation for the fluid, abstract style Montgomery now calls <i>Kinetic Ambiguity<\/i>. Using intentional camera movement and long exposures, he transforms Joshua trees, power lines and mountains along highways from the Antelope Valley to the Victor Valley into sweeping, dreamlike compositions. \u201cI want people to have the same takeaway I do,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt makes them feel good\u2026 almost something in science fiction, this otherworldly feeling when you look at these images.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Montgomery, a Victorville resident and Cal State San Bernardino graduate, describes the exhibit as a personal milestone. \u201cIt\u2019s a big deal\u2026 the fact that it\u2019s a solo show makes it that much more special,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i>Kinetic Ambiguity<\/i>\u00a0asks viewers to reconsider the possibilities of landscape photography. In Montgomery\u2019s words, it\u2019s not about technical perfection but emotional resonance: \u201cI\u2019m not shooting for magazine covers or commercial work\u2026 I just want to create something that motivates me to do more, that feels beautiful, that makes people feel good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>The exhibit at the <\/span><span>Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography in Miller Hall <\/span><span>is open now until April 17.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edward Lance Montgomery with his work in the Kinetic Ambiguity\u00a0exhibit at Miller Hall.
