{"id":549,"date":"2017-10-20T21:03:45","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T21:03:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/?p=549"},"modified":"2022-01-12T12:49:32","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T20:49:32","slug":"enactus-students-assemble-solar-water-filters-for-cambodians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/2017\/10\/20\/enactus-students-assemble-solar-water-filters-for-cambodians\/","title":{"rendered":"University of La&nbsp;Verne Enactus Students Assemble Solar Water Filters for Cambodians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A handful of University of La&nbsp;Verne business students who will one day become leaders in technology, marketing, and other fields shifted their focus this month to an even bolder objective: saving lives.<\/p>\n<p>The 17 members of the university\u2019s Enactus club chapter gathered at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarcleanwatersolution.com\/\">Solar Solutions<\/a> in San Diego to build AquaPaks \u2013 solar water pasteurizers invented by the company\u2019s CEO, Frank Husson. AquaPaks are plastic bags that produce potable water when placed under the sun for about 90 minutes \u2013 enough time for solar radiation to kill any bacteria or viruses.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Issam Ghazzawi, professor of management and Enactus adviser, said the 50 bags assembled by the students will be sent to Cambodia, potentially providing clean water to more than 150 people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought about Africa at first,\u201d Ghazzawi said. \u201cThen a friend of mine who visited Cambodia told me about how bad the water is there and how many children are getting diseases and dying because of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2014 report by UNICEF shows that about 6.3 million Cambodians do not have access to safe drinking water, making them vulnerable to water-borne diseases. The population consists of about 3.9 million people who are poor and live in rural areas, and about 40 percent are children.<\/p>\n<p>Enactus is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring students to change the world through entrepreneurial action. Students in the University of La&nbsp;Verne chapter apply the business knowledge they learn in the classroom to address real-world problems.<\/p>\n<p>Master of Business Administration student David Moreno, a manager at Solar Solutions, caught an Enactus presentation in 2016 and immediately thought of AquaPaks as a potential project for the students.<\/p>\n<p>Students embraced the idea and came to the plant ready to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody wanted to help out. Everybody wanted to learn,\u201d Moreno said. \u201cWe put together a little assembly line and each student was helping with the production of the AquaPak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yiting Lin, a senior business administration major, said he organized the trip, learning management skills, confidence, and good communication along the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the key to being a good leader,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Tiffany Villagrana, a junior business administration major who is considering a career in marketing, said Husson made a positive impression on students because he paid for all of the AquaPaks out of his own pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made me realize how good it is to help others even though I don\u2019t know them,\u201d she said. \u201cEven something so small can change lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students are also working on other projects for Enactus this year. One, called \u201cBackyard Outreach,\u201d involves collecting business clothing for students from the Pomona Unified School District who are nearing graduation.<\/p>\n<p>In the last two years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/business.laverne.edu\/enactus\/\">University of La&nbsp;Verne\u2019s Enactus students<\/a> have planted vegetable gardens to combat childhood obesity, collected business clothing to help Filippino college graduates get jobs, and traveled to Mexico to help a woman start a catering business.<\/p>\n<p>The team has earned local, regional, and national accolades for its
