The killing of Michael Brown and the events surrounding and subsequent to the shooting have made international headlines. In keeping with its core principle of being a \u201cbeacon of hope and inspiration,\u201d the University of La Verne College of Law is holding a five-part \u201cTeach-In\u201d for the extended University community and the general public.<\/p>\n
The third in the series, \u201cThe Social Context in Which Law Enforcement Operates: Militarization of Police and Race Relations in Law Enforcement Encounters,\u201d will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the College of Law in Ontario.<\/p>\n
Speakers from different perspectives \u2013 the community, law enforcement, the law and legal education \u2013 are participating in this series. The Teach-In is geared to bring about intellectual honesty, humility, empathy, courage and perseverance in the challenging issues of race, cultural differences, community development, and police and government conduct. It is also intended to be the beginning of a series of necessary conversations that we must have in order to move past the rhetoric of race relations, and into an era of racial understanding.<\/p>\n
Topics for the initial two segments covered \u201cLegal Issues and Legal Responses,\u201d and \u201cLooters, Protectors or Criminals? Advocates or Thugs? Why it\u2019s important to Examine Our Perceptions.\u201d The remaining sessions will include \u201cCommunity Justice: Community-based Alternatives to Traditional Law Enforcement,\u201d scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, on the University of La Verne campus; and \u201cVoting Power: How the Community Can Make its Voice Heard,\u201d set for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at the College of Law in Ontario.<\/p>\n
