{"id":7489,"date":"2018-06-19T17:48:59","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T17:48:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/?p=7489"},"modified":"2022-01-12T12:32:37","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T20:32:37","slug":"special-education-students-selected-teaching-program-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/2018\/06\/19\/special-education-students-selected-teaching-program-china\/","title":{"rendered":"University of La&nbsp;Verne Special Education Students Selected for Teaching Program in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Default\"><span>Directors of an international English immersion teaching program selected two University of La&nbsp;Verne graduate students to teach elementary school children in Shanghai in July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Cherilyn Helguera and Stella Hansen will teach third- through sixth-grade students in geography, history, math, science and other subjects through the Rise Immersion Subject English (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.risecenter.com\/\">RISE<\/a>) program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>Dr. Pat Taylor, associate professor of education and co-director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/education.laverne.edu\/neurodiversity\/\">Center for Neurodiversity, Learning and Wellness<\/a>, said she is proud of both <\/span><span>students for their accomplishment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u201cThese students will be outstanding ambassadors for the university, the <a href=\"https:\/\/education.laverne.edu\/\">LaFetra College of Education<\/a>, the special education programs, and the Center for Neurodiversity, Learning, and Wellness,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Helguera said Chinese students learn primarily through teacher direction and memorization. But she and Hansen will expose them to the American teaching approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u201cWe will come in to offer critical thinking, group work, and presentations,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Hansen said their lesson plans include hands-on activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u201cAn example would be a lesson in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) such as creating a <\/span><span>robot with recycled materials,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>Helguera said the three-week program will be a learning experience for her students, and allow her to bring home knowledge that she can eventually <\/span><span>bring to her own classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Taylor said the students, who are considered fellows for the Center for Neurodiversity, will live the mission of the center through their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>\u201cExploring diverse settings and working with people from around the world is an outstanding and direct connection
