{"id":5074,"date":"2010-10-11T22:16:30","date_gmt":"2010-10-12T05:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/"},"modified":"2018-04-19T14:53:23","modified_gmt":"2018-04-19T21:53:23","slug":"windows-vista","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wireless-access-at-residence-halls\/windows-vista\/","title":{"rendered":"Wireless Access at Residence Halls: Windows Vista"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Instructions for Windows Vista (for The Oaks, Brandt, and Stu-Han Residence Halls)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>STEP 1:<\/strong> Make sure the wireless card is enabled on your laptop.\u00a0 There are two settings that could cause your wireless card to be disabled:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Most laptops have a button to disable\/enable the wireless card\u2014when enabled the button will usually be lit.<\/li>\n<li>If you are not able to connect to wireless networks, then there is a chance that the Windows operating system might have disabled your wireless network card. Here are the steps to check if your wireless network card is disabled by the Windows Vista operating system:\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>Click <strong>Start <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Control Panel &gt; Network and Internet <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Network and <\/strong> <strong>Sharing Center <\/strong>&gt; on the left side, under <strong>Tasks<\/strong>, click on <strong>Manage network connections.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Look for the <strong>Wireless Network Connection <\/strong>icon, if the line underneath shows <strong>&#8220;Not Connected&#8221;<\/strong> or <strong>&#8220;Connected&#8221;<\/strong>, then your wireless network card is already enabled, but if it shows &#8220;<strong>Disabled<\/strong>&#8220;, then right-click on your wireless network card and select <strong>&#8220;Enable&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong> STEP 2: <\/strong>Right-click on the network connection icon on the bottom-right corner of your laptop screen, select <strong>Network and Sharing Center <\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista_open_network_ctr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5918\" title=\"vista_open_network_ctr\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista_open_network_ctr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista_open_network_ctr.jpg 400w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista_open_network_ctr-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nSTEP 3: <\/strong>On the left side of the window, click on <strong>Manage wireless networks<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-network-ctr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5917\" title=\"vista-network-ctr\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-network-ctr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-network-ctr.jpg 678w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-network-ctr-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nSTEP 4: <\/strong>Click on the <strong>Add<\/strong> button.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-manage-wlan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5919\" title=\"vista-manage-wlan\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-manage-wlan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-manage-wlan.jpg 645w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-manage-wlan-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 5: <\/strong>Click on <strong>Manually create a network profile<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-add-network.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5920\" title=\"vista-add-network\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-add-network.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"628\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-add-network.jpg 628w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-add-network-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 6: <\/strong>The following settings needs to be changed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. For the <strong>Network name:<\/strong> field, enter <em>La&nbsp;Verne Housing<\/em> (the network name is case-sensitive, so be sure to capitalize the first letters of each word)<br \/>\n2. For the <strong>Security type: <\/strong>drop-down menu, choose <strong>No authentication (Open) <\/strong><br \/>\n3. Check the box next to <strong>Start this connection automatically <\/strong><br \/>\n4. Click on the red X button on the upper-right corner of the window to close it.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to verify if you are connected to the Brandt Hall or Stu-Han wireless network is to right-click on the network connection icon <a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/wlan_icon3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5926\" title=\"wlan_icon\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/wlan_icon3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"19\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a> on the bottom-right corner of your laptop screen, select <strong>Network and Sharing Center<\/strong> and it will show that you are connected (shown in the second screen shot below). Notice the red X between La&nbsp;Verne Housing and Internet. Once you log in to the wireless network (explained in the following steps), the red X will go away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-status.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5925\" title=\"vista-status\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-status.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-status.jpg 678w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-status-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 9: <\/strong>Open a web browser so your computer can go to the Login web page. If your browser does not automatically go to the Login web page, please type in any website address and press Enter.<\/p>\n<p>Enter your University of La&nbsp;Verne e-mail username and password and click on <strong>Submit<\/strong>. For example, if your e-mail address is john&#46;sm&#105;&#116;h&#64;&#108;&#97;&#118;e&#114;n&#101;&#46;edu, then enter john.smith in the User Name box.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-login-page3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5927\" title=\"vista-login-page\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-login-page3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"681\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-login-page3.jpg 681w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-login-page3-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 681px) 100vw, 681px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>STEP 10: <\/strong>When you have successfully logged in, a pop-up window will appear with a Logout button.\u00a0Your computer will stay logged in up to 12 hours unless you log out.<\/p>\n<p>Note: you can be logged in on up to three computers at the same time with the same e-mail username&#8211;if you are already concurrently logged in on three computers, and you try to login on a fourth computer using the same e-mail username, you will not be able to log in on that fourth computer (and no error message will appear).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-pop-up1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5928\" title=\"vista-pop-up\" src=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-pop-up1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-pop-up1.jpg 407w, https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2010\/10\/vista-pop-up1-212x300.jpg 212w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP 11: <\/strong>When you click the Logout button, you will get a message shown in the screen shot below.
