Job Description: Undergraduate Peer Tutor
The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides academic support across all majors and disciplines with the goal of helping students become engaged, self-sufficient learners who are confident in their abilities to reach their academic goals. ASC services include one-on-one tutoring, peer-assisted learning groups, and academic skills workshops.
All applications for peer tutoring positions will be reviewed and selections will be made based on the Director and/or Assistant Director’s assessment(s) of the following qualifications:
- A strong academic background in the subjects to be tutored (minimum overall GPA of 3.25 and a letter grade of A- or better in the courses you wish to tutor plus a faculty recommendation);
- Ability to communicate effectively to help students construct their own understandings of challenging course material;
- Ability to listen to the needs of students and work cooperatively in setting realistic and productive tutoring session goals;
- Sensitivity to the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, ability, and academic backgrounds of ASC users;
- Dependability and personal accountability; and
- Self-motivation, self-regulation, and a desire to mature and learn in a professional teaching/learning environment.
Job responsibilities include:
- Helping students develop their own best practices for becoming self-sufficient learners;
- Adhering to ASC policies, procedures, and philosophies;
- Carrying out all ASC obligations in a responsible and professional manner;
- Attending paid tutor-training orientation sessions prior to the beginning of each regular semester (fall and spring);
- Attending paid professional development/tutor training meetings during each regular semester (fall and spring) and completing follow-up activities;
- Completing supplemental ASC professional development activities (tutor reflections, tutor observations, ASC class visits, etc.)
- Familiarizing yourself with and helping maintain available resources for students and staff in the ASC;
- Referring students and/or staff to appropriate resource materials based on individual needs;
- Gathering and reporting accurate data for each student and/or session;
- Reporting any problems with schedules and/or tutees to the Director of the ASC
- Other duties as assigned by the ASC Director and/or Assistant Director.
