One Book, One University: Our Migrant Souls: A Meditation on Race and the Meanings and Myths of “Latino” Héctor Tobar
October 22, 2025 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

In Our Migrant Souls, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Héctor Tobar explores facets of “Latino” identity, blending the historical with the current to reflect on how ethnicity, race, and cultural heritage are constructed in our society. Tobar’s free-flowing meditations intertwine various themes in ways that engage the personal, the familial, the social, and the political. This mixture of personal memoir, history, and migration and deportation narratives offers an accessible, compelling approach to topics like immigration, systemic injustices, and the meaning of home. Throughout the book, Tobar works to place the varied experiences of “Latino” peoples at the center of contemporary American life, presenting their stories as crucial narratives in the larger American story. Our Migrant Souls won the Zócalo Public Square Book Prize and the Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction.
