“Songs of Hope & Resistance”: A Special Concert for Black History Month Featuring Michal Dawson Connor

The University of La Verne Music Department proudly presents “Songs of Hope & Resistance”, a moving and powerful concert celebrating Black History Month. This special performance will feature celebrated vocalist Michal Dawson Connor, performing African-American spirituals in his own exquisite arrangements.

Also performing in the program will be Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann, adjunct professor of music at ULV, performing “The Plaint of the Black Swan”, a unique piece by Mr. Connor for viola and piano.

About the Artists:
Michal Dawson Connor
A renowned performer and composer, Michal Dawson Connor specializes in African-American spirituals and the rich vocal repertoire of American composers such as Charles Ives, Samuel Barber, and Aaron Copland. His Broadway credits include Ragtime, Showboat, The Most Happy Fella, Big River, and Porgy and Bess. He has performed for figures such as President Ronald Reagan, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Brigadier General Charles McGee of the Tuskegee Airmen. His book, The Slave Letters, has been adapted into a choral work performed by the Wagner Chorale.
Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann
Dr. Mann is an esteemed musician and educator, serving as an adjunct professor of music at the University of La Verne. She is the conductor of the La Verne Symphony Orchestra, and an accomplished violist.
