The Translation of the Florentine Codex

November 9, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España (General history of the things of New Spain), commonly known as the Florentine Codex is an encyclopedic work about the people and culture of central Mexico compiled by Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagún (1499-1590). This remarkable work of 2,400 pages, 12 books, and more than 2,000 images created by native artists, has been digitized by The Getty Research Institute.

Join us for a conversation with Dr. León García Garagarza, member of the Getty project team, who will talk about the creation of the Digital Florentine Codex (DFC) and about his work in the field of transcriptions and translations of the original Nahuatl and Spanish texts.
