Dr. George Keeler
For 40 years at the University of La Verne, Dr. Keeler has led his publication students to top awards in national and regional contests that have brought honor and acclaim to the individual student journalists and helped launch impressive careers. Those honors include best in the state California Intercollegiate Press Association Sweepstakes Awards, first place in Society of Professional Journalists Region 11 contests (California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii) for newspaper and magazine, 14 All-American Awards through the associated Collegiate Press as newspaper adviser, and many silver crown awards (top 3 percent in the nation) for excellence in newspaper and magazine from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, among many others. With a professional background in national and regional magazines (The Thalians Magazine and Messenger Magazine), Dr. Keeler presently is chief adviser to the University’s La Verne Magazine in addition to heading the Communications Department Internship Program. Dr. Keeler is a writing coach to industry, a national magazine photographer, a contributing writer to regional newspapers and a professional media workshop leader. He serves as adviser to the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and has for many years provided leadership on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Professional Chapter. National Society of Professional Journalism leadership selected Dr. Keeler to serve as academic chair and news room supervisor at the October 1998 SPJ National Conference, where he advised a scholarship student staff from Stanford, Northwestern, Towson, UCLA, ULV, University of Connecticut, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and Eastern Kentucky University in covering the convention utilizing the web, video, and a daily 12-16 page newspaper. Dr. Keeler is active in faculty governance, presently serving as chair of the Faculty Assembly and as a member of the Faculty Senate. During the past three years, he has led as chair of the University’s Undergraduate Academic Policies Committee, as President of the American Association of University Professors, ULV Chapter, and as executive director of the California Journalism Conference. Dr. Keeler has led ULV student study trips to Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Vietnam, Thailand and Hawaii.
