Chronic illness are pre-existing medical conditions that require long term or repeated ongoing medical attention. SHC provides continuity of care by offering monitoring, medication maintenance, medication refills, and support with lifestyle evaluations and/or modifications.
At the student health center, chronic illnesses commonly encountered include:
- Asthma – recurrent breathing difficulties triggered by allergens, stress, or exercise. Mild severity
- Diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) – offers monitoring of glucose levels, laboratory testing for screening, and medication refills.
- Thyroid disorders – offers laboratory testing, screening and medication refills.
- Seizure disorders (e.g., epilepsy) – offers continuity of care with easy access to refill of medications
- Mental health disorders – offers screening and referral to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) department for counseling and/or treatment. No referral needed for self-referral to CAPS at 909-448-4173.
- Autoimmune conditions – offers continuity of care by offering laboratory testing for screening and medication. Examples such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), etc.
- Allergic conditions – such as recurrent reaction to environmental or food allergies. Medication management provided
- Hypertension – offers blood pressure monitoring, laboratory testing and screening, and medication refills
