Communications with Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence counselors/ Victim Advocates are protected under California Evidence Code Sections 1035.4 and 1037.2, ensuring that these conversations remain confidential.
Victim Advocates provide:
- Confidential, nonjudgemental support
- Information about rights and options to help someone make an informed decision.
- Help with reporting sexual assault to Law Enforcement, Title IX or Campus Safety. which includes in-person accompaniments.
- Information and accompaniments to sexual assault forensic SAFE/SART exams and other medical options

Deciding to report a crime is a very personal decision. It’s okay to report to police or Campus Safety, not report, or be undecided about reporting. A Victim Advocate can provide all information about reporting so the victim/ survivor can make an informed decision.

Off-Campus Non-Confidential Reporting Options
Law Enforcement
If you wish to proceed with a criminal case, a law enforcement office can take a report, and provide access to a medical care after an assault of sexual violence or domestic violence. Police Departments are available 24/7 by dialing 911.
Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking incidents can be reported an any time, immediately after the incident, days later or even years afterward. However, the statute of limitations varies depending on factors such as type of crime, by state and amount of time that has passed. A Victim Advocate or Law Enforcement office can provide you with Specific information and guidance.
