Bogumil Baranowski, Elmeera Nosrati, Ian Lising

The University of La Verne will host a TEDx talk called “TEDxUniversityofLaVerne” on April 24. The talk, themed “New Perspectives,” will feature three speakers who will discuss investing, the effect of culture on ambition, and communicating truth in the age of alternative facts.

The event is student-driven, with public relations major Flora Wong leading the charge as curator and event organizer.

Bogumil Baranowski, a New York investor whose firm helps families and entrepreneurs, will speak about the advantages people have over professional investors in building wealth. His speech will be called “The Great Investor in You – How to Use the 3 Secret Advantages You Already Have!” Bogumil wrote the book “Outsmarting the Crowd: A Value Investor’s Guide to Starting, Building, and Keeping a Family Fortune.” Baranowski will be available for a book signing following the talk.

Elmeera Nosrati, president of the Associated Students of the University of La Verne, will present “Traditional Culture vs. Modern Ambition,” which explores ways culture shapes lives. Nosrati will show how people can create their own path by debunking preconceived notions and stereotypes related to culture. She is a business administration major who is a member of Sigma Kappa and the university’s honors program. Nosrati is fluent in four languages.

Ian Lising, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will present “6,000 vs. 13.8 Billion,” which addresses ways belief and truth can be communicated. Lising began serving as a debate coach at the University of La Verne in 1999 and started teaching in the Speech Communication Department in 2000. Lising has served as the World Universities Debating Council Chair and was named World Council Member Emeritus. He has been honored as one of the University of La Verne’s 125 Influential Individuals.
