The Center for Multicultural Services collaborates with individuals from numerous departments to coordinate culturally-based graduation celebration ceremonies that complement the university’s commencement ceremonies. The cultural celebrations DO NOT replace the formal graduation commencement ceremonies. These cultural celebrations acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of La Verne students and highlight the accomplishments of individuals within the student’s familial and cultural context.
The cultural graduation celebrations will be done in alignment with the new Commencement schedule and will henceforth only be celebrated in spring. This means students completing their degree program in winter 2022 and in spring 2022 will both be invited to participate in the May 2022 cultural graduation celebrations.
The May 2022 cultural graduation celebrations will consist of the following:
- Multicultural Graduation Celebration (inclusive of all affinity groups): Friday, May 20, 2022 from 6:00-8:00pm (doors open at 5:00pm)
- Latinx Cultural Graduation Celebration: Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 9:30am-12:30pm (doors open at 8:30am)
- Black Cultural Graduation Celebration: Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 2:30-5:30pm (doors open at 1:30pm)
At present, we are planning these cultural graduation celebrations to be in-person. Formal sign-up will be done via Campus Labs. In preparation for participation in the cultural celebration of choice, we are asking every student who wishes to participate to submit a 30-word statement with the following prompt: What do you want to express to those who have supported you in your academic journey? You can begin to think about this question before you register on Campus Labs.
All Spring 2022 cultural graduation celebration participants will use Campus Labs to register: Link to Campus Labs will be activated during the spring Grad Finale in March 2022.
Registration deadline for Spring 2022 cultural graduation celebration participants is Monday, May 2, 2022 at 5:00pm PDT.
The cultural graduation sashes can be purchased through the University of La Verne Campus Store. The sash options* that students can purchase in the University of La Verne bookstore are the following:
- Black/Kente cultural sash
- Latinx/Recuerdo cultural sash
- Middle Eastern/Arabic cultural sash
- Multicultural/Unity in Diversity cultural sash
- Native American/Indigenous cultural sash
- Pacific Islander/Asian American cultural sash
- Rainbow/Lavender cultural sash
Registration site will be activated during the spring Grad Finale in March 2022, with registration deadline for spring cultural graduation celebrations being Monday, May 2, 2022, 5pm (PST).
At present, face masks will be required during the in-person cultural graduation celebrations. At the time of the celebration, students will bring their own sash and while on stage, the sash bestower will bestow it on the participating student. Each student will in turn read to those present their 30-word statement of appreciation to those who have supported them in their academic journey. Each celebration becomes a personalized experience for the student, their family and friends.
Students wishing to participate in spring 2022 must be cleared for graduation in winter 2022 (January 2022) and/or spring 2022.
For the cultural graduation celebrations, students will wear their cap and gown, but not their academic hood. The cultural sashes can be purchased in the Campus Store.
