College of Law Schedules a four-part “Teach-In” on the Incident and Issues in Ferguson, MO.
The killing of Michael Brown and the events surrounding and subsequent to the shooting have made international headlines. In keeping with its Core Principle of being a Beacon of Hope and Inspiration, the College of Law is holding a four-part “Teach-In” for members of the University community commencing on September 16 in the College of Law. Other parts of the series will occur on the University of La Verne campus. Speakers from different perspectives – the community, law enforcement, the law and legal education will participate in a dialogue on several topics.
The Teach-In series is geared to bring about intellectual honesty, humility, empathy, courage and perseverance in the challenging issues of race, cultural differences, community development, and police and government conduct. The topics will include, “Legal Issues and Legal Responses,” “Understanding for Other Viewpoints,” “Law Enforcement in a Social Context,” and “Developing Alternatives: Restorative Justice, Safety and Community Organizing.” The “Teach-In” series is also geared to be the beginning of a series of conversations that we must have and continue to have if we are to ever move past rhetoric of race relations into an era of racial understanding.
