Ruth Carter, First ABA Legal Rebel from Arizona, to Speak at La Verne Law
On March 26, Ruth Carter, Esq. will visit La Verne Law to share her story of how she went from being a non-traditional law student, middle of the pack grade-wise, to the first ABA Legal Rebel from Arizona.
Carter’s talk at La Verne Law is part of her 14-day “Undeniable Law School Tour” that will include eight visits to law schools around the country. She chose La Verne Law because she was impressed with an alumna. “During my 1L summer, I did an internship with the Army JAG and one of the lawyers in the office was a La Verne graduate. I was quite impressed with her, and I would love to visit her alma mater,” she said.
Students and Alumni are invited to attend the event, which will begin at 5:15 p.m. in Room 216 at La Verne Law’s Ontario Campus. Click here to register.
As she learned about the College of Law, Carter became convinced that the law school would be a perfect fit. “La Verne is dedicated to providing students with practical skills that will enable them to stand out to future employers and be practice-ready upon graduation,” she said. “With a significant number of your students working in small firms and opening practices shortly after graduation, having the ability to network with prospective employers and clients and to create professional opportunities for themselves are critical skills they will need in their tool boxes in this highly competitive legal market.”
During her talk, Carter will focus on teaching law students real-life entrepreneurial techniques and tools for long-term professional success – especially for students who want to use social media to network effectively and those who are interested in opening a practice. She says that “the old rule used to be ‘It’s not what you know but who you know.’ Now it’s ‘It’s not who you know, but who knows you.’”
Specifically, she will share how to:
Network more effectively at events
Use social media to make connections
Start a blog to stand out from the crowd
Create professional opportunities
Carter is not new to public speaking. She has spoken at the ABA TechShow and South by Southwest (SXSW). Her innovative activities have been featured in the ABA Journal, Law Practice Magazine, Above the Law, Lawyerist, and Entrepreneur.com.
