Council on American-Islamic Relations Offering Valuable Career Opportunities

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a grassroots civil rights and advocacy group, is working with La Verne Law’s Career Development Office to offer students a unique learning experience. Law students have the opportunity to join CAIR’s Civil Rights Department or their Immigrants’ Rights Center.

At the Civil Rights Department, students can learn how the organization protects and defends the constitutional rights of American Muslims. The department counsels, mediates and advocates on behalf of Muslims and others who have experienced religious discrimination.

At the Immigrants’ Rights Center, students have the opportunity to learn how CAIR empowers non-citizens by helping them achieve independence, security, and discover how to fully participate in American Society.

“With regional offices in more than 20 states, CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy group. They offer our law students an enriching environment to explore public interest work,” said Michael Chen, Director of Career Services & Professional Development at La Verne Law.

CAIR’s Anaheim office is seeking to create an educational partnership with La Verne Law by offering externships to second and third year students. CAIR will be on-campus to interview La Verne Law students on September 10, 2015. During the course of a semester, students will learn how to counsel individuals, draft client letters, and research the law for civil rights and immigration cases.

In its offer, CAIR states “We take great pride in the work we do and would like to offer the same opportunity for students interested in this type of work.”
