University of La Verne Celebrates Black History Month with Events Series

From panel discussions on race to a Black Lives Matter walk, the University of La Verne has a series of events planned throughout February to celebrate Black History Month.

Feb. 6: Discussion panel – “African/Black Presence in Latin America,” 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Presidents Dining Room.

Feb. 8: Discussion panel “Critique (challenges) of La Verne,” 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Campus Center Ballroom B.

Feb. 9: Discussion panel “Prison Industrial Complex (Modern Day Slavery),” 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Campus Center Ballroom B.

Feb. 13: “Black History and Hip Hop” presentation by Assistant Professor of Education Dr. Issac Carter, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Campus Center Ballroom B. A community bonding lunch will be at the same time in Vista Courtyard.

Feb. 14: The College of Law and the Office of Diversity and Inclusivity present “Defamation,” a nationally-acclaimed courtroom drama that explores race, religion, gender, class, and the law. The audience is the jury. The play will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dailey Theatre on the central campus. Tickets:

Feb. 23:

•  Discussion panel – “Colorism in the Black Community/Effects on Self Esteem and Identity” from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Campus Center Ballroom B.
• The College of Law presents Jody Armour, USC professor of law, with “Mass Incarceration, Race, and Class.” The lecture will be from noon to 1 p.m. in room 206 and 217 at the College of Law, 320 E. D St., Ontario.

Feb. 27: Black Lives Matter walk at 11:30 a.m. Starting location TBA.
