University of La Verne Student Named Newman Civic Fellow
University of La Verne sophomore radio broadcasting major Rudy Amaya has been named a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow through Campus Compact.
The Newman Civic Fellowship provides students with training in civic leadership and problem solving. Students attend regional, state, and national conferences, participate in webinars on skill development and professional learning, and receive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities. It is a one-year program.
“Amaya aims to empower both children and parents to work together in order to thrive in areas they are passionate – building up self-worth and opportunities to expand beyond what they have known in academic and spiritual areas,” said University of La Verne President Devorah Lieberman.
Amaya, who also served as student speaker at University of La Verne’s 2017 Scholarship Gala, is on the executive board for the First Generation Club and works for the Office of Civic and Community Engagement as a student ambassador. He also works for the Church of the Brethren as a denominational young adult committee member.
Amaya said his perspective about the community around him changed once he began serving others.
“My perspective shifted from what can they do for me, to what can I do for us,” he said.
The need for leaders committed to their communities is crucial, said Campus Compact president Andrew Seligsohn.
“We rebuilt the Newman Civic Fellowship experience because our country needs more people who know how to bring communities together for positive change. We are thrilled to welcome this group of 273 exemplary students as the first cohort to participate in this new model.”
The Newman Civic Fellowship is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
