University of La Verne to Celebrate Winter Commencement on Feb. 3
About 600 students will celebrate their academic success at the University of La Verne’s 2018 Winter Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, Feb. 3. All three ceremonies will be at the university’s Sports Science and Athletics Pavilion, 1950 Third St., La Verne.
The university has cleared more than 900 students to graduate.
Silva Katchiguian, an Armenian International Women’s Association board member and former president of the organization’s Los Angeles affiliate, will be the featured speaker at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony for the College of Arts and Sciences. Katchiguian advocates for the rights of women and girls in areas such as education, entrepreneurship, and fair wages. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Art in Teaching in Communication from the University of La Verne.
The keynote speaker for the 2 p.m. ceremony for the LaFetra College of Education will be David Villarino Gonzalez, CEO of the Farmworker Institute of Education and Leadership Development (FIELD), a nonprofit organization founded by Cesar Chavez in 1978. Gonzalez directs a $7 million budget that includes a charter high school for 400 adults, a statewide English as a Second Language program, and a youth environmental conservation corps.
Martha Daniel, CEO of the cybersecurity corporation Information Management Resources, Inc., will speak at the 5:30 p.m. ceremony for the College of Business and Public Management. Her company provides network security and asset management solutions for local, national, and international organizations. Daniel holds an MBA from the University of La Verne.
The ceremonies honor undergraduate and graduate candidates from the university’s La Verne campus, regional campuses, and off-campus programs.
A multicultural graduation celebration – an event where students mark their success in a cultural way with family and friends – will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 27 in the Sports Science & Athletics Pavilion. Professor of Public Administration Dr. Matthew Witt will serve as keynote speaker. A reception will follow the ceremony in Campus Center.
